On August 9th ,2006 The New York Times published an article detailing how out of the millions of search inquires on America on line, AOL, can weed through user specific searches to identify a single user. That information was given to researchers. The bigger question is if your search history information can be easily and targeted, what can be done with. Many are beginning to ask just that. It is not uncommon for massive companies to monitor your individual search quires and make this information available to third party researchers.

If you are a user of Google, Dogpile, Askjeeves, MSN or Yahoo. You are already familiar to some extent search engines record your search history. If you don't clear search history folders. You search entry box becomes more personal. Here is how:

When you key into either the search engines home page search box, toolbar search box, the the search terms you keyed are stored unless disabled. Then, on subsequent uses of the search box, it provides suggestion on whatever you may be search for. It performs this by showing a drop down list filled with previously keyed search terms whose initial characters match what you are keying.

For example, if you in the past searched for adult content with the word “hot sex” in title and your spouse, kids or boss sit down and start to key in “hot tamales,” the words “hot sex ” will be in the drop down box as a suggestion for them. You and your family are not the only you can see these searches. Of course the search engines have a record of it. So if you rather have your search history private you should delete these files. If you have some extremely sensitive data or embarrassing search history queries. You will have to preform a secure delete to permanently clear search engine history files. This can only be done with third party privacy software.
