how to get sound back on win xp 32bit

..I inadvertently deleted SOUNDMAX from the libr. I am also getting this DLL msg :

"An exception occurred while trying to run
"newdev.dll,ClientSideInstall\\.\pipe\PNP_Device_Install_Pipe_0.{ hex numbers }"

After downloading the "appropriate file" from the IBM-LENOVO site (www-307.ibm.com/pc/support ) by clicking on file link : 1ga241ww.exe ..the wizard asked me to overwrite certain Audio files..did this and clicked FINISH, and re-booted.
Still no audio device in the DEVICE MANAGER and no sound.. the DLL is stil appearing...
