Windows desktop appears slowly

I have a system with P-IV 2.8 Ghz / 512 MB RAM / 80 GB HDD with Windows XP Pro.The system boots very slow after logging in to the user phase. It takes nearly 2 minutes to accept any click from the user after logging in. Almost it freeze out for 2 minutes after hitting the user. Desktop icons comes but it will not take anything for 2 minutes. Kindly help me to get out of this problem.
